Vaccine distribution for 80+ underway

The Windsor Essex County Health Unit is starting to vaccinate residents over the age of 80 at the WFCU Centre.

"There was good energy and everyone was excited to see the first people enter the WFCU area. But everything is running very smoothly and it's pretty amazing to see our over 80 plus seniors coming into the centre," said CEO and Chief Nursing Officer Theresa Marentette.

As of Monday morning, a total of 27,129 doses of the vaccine have been administered in Windsor-Essex. There are 11,553 residents who have received both doses of the vaccine.

The Windsor Essex County Health Unit is currently vaccinating residents over the age of 80 and essential health care workers in the community by appointment only.

There are now 11,300 residents over the age of 80 who have pre-registered for the vaccine. Health Unit staff are calling individuals at random to book appointments. If an individual is unable to take the appointment offered to them they will be placed back into the pool for the next available time slot. The health unit is currently booking around 200 appointments a day.

"When our staff are calling people to give them their appointment they said that some people did cry on the phone, they were really excited and they couldn't believe they got called because it is a little bit of a lottery system but very very appreciative," said Marentette.

There were 28 new cases of COVID-19 reported on Monday. Among the new cases, nine are close contacts of confirmed cases, two are community-acquired, one is outbreak related, and 13 are still under investigation.

There are currently 290 active cases in the community.

Local hospitals are treating 41 patients who are positive for the virus.

Active outbreaks in the community have gone down significantly. There are only two long-term care and retirement homes still experiencing outbreaks, as well as four workplaces, two shelters and two hospital units.
