WECHU reports 13 more COVID-19 cases

The Windsor Essex County Health Unit reported 13 new cases of COVID-19 and one new death in the region.

The health unit announced Monday that a woman in her 70s who lived in the community passed away after contracting the virus.

Among the new cases, one is related to an outbreak, two are close contacts of previously confirmed cases, two are travel-related outside of North America, and two are community acquired. The health unit is still investigating six of the cases.

Since March 2020, there have been 12,784 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the region. There are now 299 active cases of COVID-19 in the community. Local hospitals are treating 43 patients with the virus.

Over the weekend, the health unit's enforcement officers visited sites throughout the city and the county to ensure businesses were following orders under the Reopening Ontario Act.

Officers issued six tickets in total. Four tickets were issued to restaurant owners for being over capacity limits and two tickets were issued to personal owners for not following mask orders properly.

Youth volunteers practice coastal conservation

Nine young volunteers aged 11 to 17 spent three days exploring and protecting the Lake Huron coastline during the Coastal Conservation Youth Corps' inaugural program in Grand Bend from July 21 to 23.
