WECHU reports nine new COVID-19 deaths

The Windsor-Essex community has lost another nine residents to COVID-19.

Windsor Essex County Health Unit CEO and Chief Nursing Officer Theresa Marentette reported the individuals passed away between February 13 and February 17.

Six men between the ages of 60 and 100 who lived in the general population passed away after contracting COVID-19. The other three deaths were among residents of long-term care and retirement facilities. There have been 364 deaths in Windsor-Essex linked to COVID-19 since March.

The Windsor-Essex County Health Unit reported only 14 new cases of COVID-19 on Thursday. On Wednesday, there were 44 cases reported.

Medical Officer of Health Dr. Wajid Ahmed said the fluctuation can be linked to the outbreak in the local shelters.

"Outside of that outbreak setting I think the case counts are still fairly stable, between 20 and 30ish, and hoping that the trend continues and we continue to bring our active cases down," said Dr. Ahmed.

There are 304 active cases in the community.

To date, there have been two confirmed cases of COVID-19 variants in the community and another case is under investigation. The cases are not connected and there is no evidence of transmission at this time.

The region also reached a major milestone on the vaccine front in the last 24 hours. Over 10,247 people locally have been fully vaccinated.
