Site selected for new Tecumseh public school

The local English public school board has purchased the location for a new school in Tecumseh.

The Greater Essex County District School Board announced Monday that it had purchased a 5.79-acre parcel of land to build a new dual-track school, which would serve students in the Tecumseh and Lakeshore area. Dual-track involves instruction in English and French immersion.

The site is located just north of Tecumseh Road East, and west of Arlington Boulevard. The school will replace nearby D.M. Eagle Public School.

The Ontario Ministry of Education recently approved $3.7-million in funding to support the purchase of the land. The $15.5-million building was announced by the ministry through its Capital Priorities Program in the fall of 2015.

"The community deserves better schools and modern facilities to educate the next generation," said Education Minister Stephen Lecce in a media release. "This is needed progress for the community. Our government is committed to supporting young people as they seek to achieve lifelong success, and by providing safe, accessible, state-of-the-art learning environments we are helping to accomplish just that."

The school, once completed, will accommodate 651 students.
