High winds accompanying a winter storm system may cause issues along the Lake Erie shoreline.
The Essex Region Conservation Authority (ERCA) had issued a flood watch Thursday evening for the entire Lake Erie shore of Windsor-Essex and Pelee Island. That flood watch was downgraded to a shoreline conditions statement Friday afternoon.
"With the current amount of ice in place, the shoreline has additional protection from nearshore wave activity and as a result, the previously issued flood watch has been downgraded to a shoreline conditions statement," said ERCA interim Director of Watershed Management Services James Bryant. "Winds will continue to be strong out of the west-southwest, potentially for another 24 hours."
The Lake Erie shoreline, plus Pelee Island, is susceptible to higher shoreline erosion and a risk of flooding. Any splashing or spray along the shore may freeze on adjacent roads and structures, causing slippery conditions.
People living in the area are urged to stay away from places where flooding may take place. The potential for water freezing may create additional problems.
The statement is in effect through at least noon on Saturday.
