Positive trends continue, but still a long way to go

Over the past week, the Windsor Essex County Health Unit has noted some initial signs of COVID-19 cases flattening in the region.

The number of active COVID-19 cases remains high, however positivity rates and transmission rates are showing slight decreases.

"We still have a long way to go, as much as I would like to be happy about it, I think we know how quickly it can change," said Medical Officer of Health Dr. Wajid Ahmed. “I do like the trend and I want to thank everyone for following the recommendations to bring our case counts down.”

On Friday, the health unit reported 99 new cases of the virus in the region, the second day this week of only double-digit increases. The number of active cases has now dipped below the 2,000 mark and sits at 1,990.

The health unit also reported another eight deaths in the region connected to COVID-19. Five were residents of long-term care homes between the ages of 70 and 100, while three were members of the general population. The region has lost 288 people after they contracted the virus, which is 2.5 per cent of all cases. Among residents of longterm care and retirement homes, the death rate is 11.1 per cent.

Last week, around 11,000 tests were completed in the region and 8.7 per cent of them came back positive. The previous week, around the same number of tests were done and 11.7 per cent of tests came back positive.

Over the last seven days, residents in Windsor-Essex waited an average of two and half days to receive their test results. Residents in Toronto wait around a day and a half.
