The Windsor Essex County Health Unit is having to reschedule COVID-19 vaccine distribution as it is starting to experience a shortage.
Each longterm care and retirement facility, except one, has had at least one visit from the health unit to administer vaccines, however not all residents and staff were able to receive the shot due to active outbreaks. The health unit is now having to delay returning to the homes because of a shortage of vaccines.
“Until our next shipment of Moderna comes in we are really monitoring the vaccine supply carefully to ensure that we can start our second doses on time, which is 28 days from the first dose,” said CEO and Chief Nursing Officer Theresa Marentette.
The next shipment of the Moderna vaccine is expected at the beginning of February. Second doses of the vaccine will start to be administered on January 28, 2021.
On Wednesday, the health unit reported another 116 new cases of COVID-19 in the region.
Another six residents have passed away after contracting the virus. Five were residents of long-term care or retirement facilities and one was from the general population.
