After six days, a blockade at the Windsor Assembly Plant is over, at least for now.
The blockade started on January 5 when leadership at Unifor Local 444 blocked the entrance to the plant in a dispute over successor rights with Motipark.
Motipark recently won the contract to transport vehicles from the assembly line to storage parking lots before they are transported to dealership across Canada and the U.S.
Unifor Local 444 Dave Cassidy told BlackburnNews.com last week he believed he had an agreement with Motipark that it would it would continue to employ 60 Unifor members who had been employed under the previous contract with Auto Warehousing Company.
However, Motipark hired its own employees.
Cassidy said Monday morning Fiat-Chrysler Automobiles reached out to AWC and has said now that company will take over the work on a temporary basis until Unifor can resolve its issues with Motipark.
"I just received word that FCA contacted AWC management and they are coming back with our workforce to run the business," posted Cassidy on Facebook. "Motipark, the employer who won the contract, believes they can simply lower workers worth and not recognize our union is woefully misguided and this won't be tolerated."
Unifor plans to file an application today with the Ontario Labour Relations Board over Motipark's refusal to respect successor rights.
