Record 250 COVID-19 cases reported in Windsor-Essex

The Windsor-Essex region broke another record with 250 new cases of COVID-19 reported by the Windsor Essex County Health Unit Wednesday.

The health unit also reported another three deaths in the region. A man in his 40s, a woman in her 70s, and a woman in her 90s passed away after contracting the virus.

Among the cases reported, 32 are related to outbreaks, 13 are connected to close contacts, and six are community-acquired. The remaining 199 cases are still under investigation.

Health unit staff expects the high case numbers to continue for at least another week.

“I’m confident that at least in the next few days when people start to follow all these measures we’ll start to see a decline in the numbers once people start to follow public health measures, we will see a decline in the numbers,” said Medical Officer of Health Dr. Wajid Ahmed. “But we can anticipate at least for a week that the numbers will be similar or maybe they will show some sign of going down but the next week is very critical for us.”

Dr. Ahmed continues to ask the public to avoid social gatherings with people who live outside their household during this critical time.

"We all have to remember that we all have our loved ones who could be vulnerable and who could die if they contract COVID. So it is all of our responsibility and we all need to act," said Dr. Ahmed.

There are 1,305 active cases in the community now. The health unit is monitoring 35 active outbreaks.

Local hospitals are treating 76 patients who are positive for COVID-19, with 16 of those patients in the intensive care unit.  There are another 129 suspected cases at the hospital.
