The Windsor-Essex region reached another COVID-19 milestone Wednesday, surpassing the 5,000 case mark.
The Windsor Essex County Health Unit reported 113 new cases of COVID-19, bringing the total number of cases to 5,012 since March.
Among the new cases, 27 are linked to active outbreaks, five are close contacts of a confirmed case, and two are community-acquired. The health unit continues to investigate 79 cases.
The University of Windsor reported three additional cases linked to its campus. All three cases are unrelated to each other and are not related to cases previously reported on campus.
It took the region only 10 days to record the last 1,000 cases while the previous 1,000 cases were recorded in 25 days.
“This is what exponential spread looks like and we can anticipate more cases in the coming days. Given the same analogy again, for every 1,000 cases we can anticipate 10 per cent of cases will be hospitalized at least for one day, meaning 100 cases will go to the acute care hospitals in the region,” said Medical Officer of Health Dr. Wajid Ahmed.
There are 890 active cases of COVID-19 in the region.
Local hospitals are treating 57 patients who are positive for the virus. There are another 79 patients in the Windsor hospitals believed to have COVID-19.
