Another 104 cases of COVID-19 have been reported by the Windsor Essex County Health Unit Thursday morning.
It's the second day in a row daily case counts have surpassed 100. On Wednesday, the health unit reported 127 cases, a new record.
Of the cases, 16 are from close contact with patients health officials have already identified. Fourteen are agri-food workers, three healthcare workers, and one person caught the virus in the community. There are 70 cases still under investigation.
The region also had another death. Medical Officer of Health Dr. Wajid Ahmed did not have many details about the latest fatality but said it was a woman in her 70s who lived in the community.
Ahmed also released details about another community cluster centred at Central Park Athletics in Windsor. Since the first patient began to feel symptoms on November 22, 32 cases have been identified.
The virus has moved into seven schools, including Corpus Christie Catholic Middle School, five community centres, two golf clubs, and a church. It spread between players on sports teams, within school cohorts and even within families.
In one family, five people have COVID-19.
"People may not realize how a single innocent event could lead to so many cases," said Ahmed. "It only takes one index case to start spreading."
While 15 cases are now considered resolved, 17 are still active.
Under the red category of the province's COVID-19 reopening framework, only ten people are allowed inside recreational facilities. Games are not being played at Central Park Athletics, but there are practices, and Ahmed suggested he may restrict those Friday morning when he makes an announcement.
There are 610 active cases in the region now. Thirty-two people are in the hospital, and seven people are in the intensive care unit.
Public health officials are also battling 24 outbreaks. Eleven workplaces are listed, along with seven long-term care and retirement homes. There are two each at hospitals, schools, and in the community.
The Greater Essex County Health Unit has reported two new cases at Essex Public School. The two are siblings, but health unit CEO Theresa Marentette was not sure if they picked it up in the school. If they did, an outbreak will be declared.
Meanwhile, the province broke another record today with 1,983 cases and 35 deaths. The numbers Thursday snap the previous record set Monday when there were 1,925.
