If a bill tabled by a Conservative MP passes, Canadians may soon be able to send their friend a bottle of wine through the mail.
Dan Albas, who represents Central Okanagan-Similkameen-Nicola in B.C., tabled the private member's bill in the House of Commons on Tuesday.
It would amend the Canada Post Act to allow direct to consumer sales of beer, wine, and distilled spirits across provincial and territorial borders in Canada.
Albas said it would give small and medium-sized businesses an economic boost and give Canadians more choice.
"Small-scale Canadian vintners, distillers, and craft brewers should not be shut out of major provincial liquor monopolies because of their size," he said. "These small businesses deserve direct access to Canadian consumers via Canada Post."
In many regions of the country, it is easier to access foreign wines and beer than it is to buy Canadian-made products.
"If passed, this legislation will help vintners, distillers, and brewers across the country who have been hard hit by the pandemic," Albas added. "It is a win-win scenario."
