City, outside workers ratify agreement

City of Windsor outside workers have ratified a one-year collective agreement.

The Canadian Union of Public Employee Local 82 and the City of Windsor agreed to a one-year term to avoid lengthy negotiations during the ongoing pandemic.

“CUPE Local 82 is a terrific partner. Since the first days of the global pandemic, their entire team stepped up to support the City of Windsor and our community partners and made a significant contribution locally. This collective agreement represents an acknowledgement by union leadership for the need to move forward together as we work through the second wave of COVID-19,” Windsor Mayor Drew Dilkens said in a statement released Monday.

The agreement mirrors many of the terms in the expiring agreement. It also includes a 1.25 per cent wage increase.

“The CUPE Local 82 bargaining team worked diligently to ensure we reached an agreement to give our members peace of mind during the holidays especially amidst of this pandemic. Our members who have been working on the frontlines are constantly adapting to the changes created by this COVID-19 environment; it was particularly important for us to provide them with some calm during this storm. These are certainly the most extraordinary circumstances to be working under. Fortunately, administration, the Mayor and Council have been great partners where we will continue to collaborate to serve our community,” added CUPE Local 82 President Rob Kolody.

CUPE Local 82 represents employees in a variety of departments including Environmental, Facilities, Forestry, Horticulture, Parks and Recreation, Public Works, Waste Water Treatment, and Pollution Control.

Contract negotiations with CUPE Local 543 are ongoing. City of Windsor management is hoping for a similar one-year agreement.
