Ministry team conducting workplace safety campaign in Windsor-Essex

The Ministry of Labour is partnering with the Windsor Essex County Health Unit to conduct a workplace safety campaign on Friday and Saturday.

Similar inspections have been done throughout Ontario since November. The aim is to ensure businesses are following all COVID-19 health and safety requirements.

The Ontario government reported when they completed the campaign in the Peel Region, 50 provincial offences officers and six by-law officers visited 330 retail establishments over a two-day period. More than 82 per cent of businesses were found to be compliant with public health requirements under the Reopening Ontario Act.

If a person or business is not found compliant with orders under the Reopening Ontario Act, they could be ticketed with a fine of $750 under the Reopening Ontario Act. Where prosecuted without issuing a ticket and on conviction, individuals could be fined up to $100,000, and directors and officers of a corporation could be fined up to $500,000.

Since November 1, tobacco and vaping officers with the WECHU have laid 10 charges, five in the hospitality industry, four in retail and one in personal care.
