Two more COVID-19 deaths in Windsor-Essex

The Windsor Essex community has lost two more people to COVID-19.

The Windsor Essex County Health Unit reported a man in his 90s and a woman in her 80s passed away Tuesday. They are the 81st and 82nd people to have died in Windsor-Essex due to COVID-19.

On Wednesday morning there were 41 new cases of the virus reported in the community. Among the new cases were 13 close contacts of previously confirmed cases and one community-acquired case. The health unit was still investigating 27 cases of COVID-19.

CEO and Chief Nursing Officer Theresa Marentette estimated it will take a week to 10 days for the health unit to catch up on case management as new staff from the ministry comes on board and they reassign current health unit staff.

"I think we'll see improvements in our ability to reach out, in a more timely manner. It is taking us a few days now to reach people with cases because of our cases being so high," said Marentette.

The health unit is reminding residents that anyone who is tested for COVID-19 must remain isolated pending test results. If results are positive, you must remain in isolation until you have more specific instructions from the health unit.

In addition to case and contact management, the health unit is monitoring 18 active outbreaks in the community.

There are 410 active cases now. Area hospitals are treating 15 people with COVID-10, two of whom are in the intensive care unit.
