Flood watch in effect as winter storm approaches

A winter storm system moving through the region over the next few days has heightened the risk of flooding for the western shoreline of Pelee Island in Lake Erie and the Lake St. Clair shoreline from Belle River to Lighthouse Cove.

By Monday afternoon, the winds will shift to the northwest and increase in speed to 40 km/h. The region could also get wind gusts of up to 60 km/h.

The Essex Region Conservation Authority said that could mean the possibility of nearshore erosion with wind overtopping and spray.

Melting snow could aggravate the situation. Environment Canada has called for up to 20 cm by Wednesday morning.

It advises the Municipality of Leamington to monitor water levels in the Mersea Road 1 Dyke and the Marentette Dyke. Point Pelee Drive could be another trouble spot in Leamington.

The City of Windsor is advised to keep a watch on water levels within the Little River Drain corridor.

The flood watch is in effect until Wednesday morning.
