The dangerous trajectory of new COVID-19 cases continues in Windsor-Essex with an additional 55 cases reported Tuesday.
The Windsor Essex County Health Unit reported that among the new cases are 18 residents of a long-term care home, 13 close contacts of previously confirmed cases, five agricultural workers, one travel-related case, one healthcare worker, and one community-acquired case. The health unit continues to investigate 16 cases.
Medical Officer of Health Dr. Wajid Ahmed fears the community is at a tipping point.
"We are still seeing the number of cases increases and we will be at the risk of going into a different restriction level in our region," said Dr. Ahmed.
There are 315 active cases in the community now. Area hospitals are treating 16 people with COVID-19 and five of them are in the intensive care unit.
The health unit has declared an outbreak at Riverplace Residence, a lodging home in Windsor, where three residents have tested positive. An outbreak has also been declared at a place of worship in Leamington after multiple staff members tested positive for the virus.
There are now five local long-term care homes experiencing outbreaks including Riverside Place in Windsor, where 17 residents and two staff members have tested positive for the virus.
The outbreak at the University of Windsor student residence is now resolved.
