Windsor Mayor Drew Dilkens will be paying closer attention to the rules after he attended a restaurant last week with seven other people.
At the time, the Windsor-Essex region was at the yellow level in the province's COVID-19 response framework which limited the number of people to a table to six people.
A photo of the dinner was recently posted online, just after the City of Windsor announced it would be increasing enforcement for businesses and individuals not following public health guidelines.
Dilkens said he was unaware of the stipulation in the regulation but he should have been paying more attention.
"I own it. It's my mistake, of all people in the city who should have been aware of the rules in place at the time it should be me. It should not have happened," said Dilkens.
Dilkens and his dinner guests were not fined for the infraction. However, he has donated $750, which is the highest fine an individual could face, to the Windsor Goodfellows.
The region is now in the orange level on the province's COVID-19 response framework. This limits four people to a table while seated at a restaurant.
