Construction begins on Amherstburg's new high school

Residents living in Amherstburg will soon see signs of progress on the new public high school on Simcoe Street.

Officials from the Greater Essex County District School Board held a small ceremony to mark the beginning of construction Friday morning at the former location of Centennial Park.

About 25 people attended the ceremony, including Amherstburg Mayor Aldo DiCarlo, Director of Education Erin Kelly, and Chair of the Board of Trustees Ron LeClair.

The school will take students from the General Amherst High School and Western Secondary School communities and will have room for 819 students.

The school board approved a plan to consolidate the school communities in 2015, and the Town of Amherstburg signed off on the sale of 15-acres of land on Simcoe Street between Fryer Street and Victoria Street South in January 2018.

J.P. Thomas Ltd and Fortis Construction won the bid to be the general contractor, and the project's budget is $24,324,129.

The as-of-yet unnamed school is expected to open in time for the school year in 2022.
