Ontario COVID-19 cases reach new heights, 39 cases in Windsor-Essex

The number of COVID-19 cases reported daily in Ontario reached a new level Thursday with 1,575 new ones.

Public Health Ontario also reported 18 new deaths for a total death toll province-wide of 3,293.

Public health officials tested 39,559 people within 24 hours.

Across Ontario, 431 people are currently in the hospital, including two patients at Windsor Regional Hospital. In Intensive Care Units, there are 98 patients, and 62 of them are on ventilators.

The Windsor-Essex County Health Unit reported 39 new cases Thursday morning. A total of 11 cases are still being investigated by public health officials. Ten are in long-term care and retirement homes, eight are from close contact with previously identified patients, and seven are workers in the agri-food sector. Two more were acquired in the community, and one is related to travel to Michigan.

There are currently 150 active cases in Windsor-Essex.

Cases are surging across Canada too. Chief Public Health Officer Dr. Theresa Tam told reporters on Wednesday Canada has averaged more than 4,000 new infections and 50 deaths a day over the past week.

On Wednesday, 4,024 people tested positive for the virus, 53 died, and the number of active cases rose to 43,177 across Canada.
