Remembrance Day services limited in Windsor-Essex this year

Remembrance Day throughout Windsor-Essex will look a little different this year with municipalities taking steps to protect veterans and residents against COVID-19.

Spectators are being asked to watch Windsor's Remembrance Day ceremony from home through the City of Windsor's Facebook Page starting at 11 a.m.

Mayor Drew Dilkens hosted a panel of veterans and veteran families Tuesday to reflect on Remembrance Day.

Theresa Charbonneau, mother of Cpl. Andrew Grenon said no matter where you are or who you are with you can still honour Canadian veterans.

"Even though we are not there in a big congregation that by no means limits the amount of service, of remembrance and gratitude that you can display," said Charbonneau.

In Amherstburg, the traditional parade and wreath-laying ceremony at the cenotaph will not take place. The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 157 will conduct a small ceremony at the cenotaph including the unveiling of two small plaques. It will be live-streamed through the branch's Facebook page

In Leamington, the parade to the Cenotaph has been cancelled. A wreath-laying ceremony will take place with limited participants.

The Town of Essex has also cancelled its ceremony to protect residents.

“Remembrance Day, at its core, means to never forget the sacrifices of the brave men and women who fought and died for our country,” said Essex Mayor Larry Snively. “A global pandemic will not stop our community from remembering those people, regardless of where we are.”

The Town of Lasalle will be holding a condensed service at the town's Cenotaph at 11 a.m. It will be attended by a small number of dignitaries and officials. The program will also be broadcast live on the town's YouTube Channel.

In Lakeshore, there will be a small ceremony at the Belle River Cenotaph and at the Comber Cenotaph. There will be no parade this year.

Residents can also watch the National Remembrance Day ceremony through the Royal Canadian Legion's Facebook page.

Municipal offices throughout the community are closed to honour the holiday. The offices of the Windsor Essex County Health Unit are also closed.
