Trick or Treating is high-risk says local health unit

The Windsor Essex County Health Unit is asking residents to consider your risk level before making Halloween plans this year.

Health officials say individuals at high risk for COVID-19 such as seniors and people who are immune-compromised should only participate in low-risk activities. These include doing Halloween themed activities with only your household or delivering treats to family and friends at a distance.

The health unit puts trick or treating as a high-risk activity and should only be done while taking public health measures into consideration. Guidelines include staying in small groups, washing your hands often and wearing a face mask.

"Not everyone will feel comfortable with participating in Halloween activities this year, and that's ok, let's give people permission to not participate and not judge," said Marentette.

Those handing out candy should consider creative ways to do so at a distance and wash their hands often. The health unit is also encouraging residents to avoid scary displays that would cause children to scream and increase the spread of respiratory droplets.
