The Windsor Essex County Health Unit is keeping a close eye on COVID-19 cases among young people after 35 per cent of cases in the last two weeks were among people under the age of 20.
The latest epidemiological study by the health unit indicates while only six per cent of all cases are among that age group, there has been a recent spike. Many of these cases are linked to a recent community cluster reported by the health unit.
"When we were investigating and reporting all those clusters it was to make sure everyone was aware of it and anyone who may have potentially come in contact with [those individuals] who needs to be self-isolating is self-isolating," said Medical Officer of Health Dr. Wajid Ahmed.
Ahmed said they will be keeping a close eye on the school districts where there are active cases as well as other schools that may be at high risk of an outbreak.
"Based on the other social determinants of health that may have an impact on the individual's or family's ability to isolate or to send their children to school and to identify any other risk," said Ahmed.
On Friday, the health unit reported three additional cases of the virus in the region. One case is a close contact of a confirmed case while two remain under investigation.
