Close contact with a confirmed case continues to be the primary source of exposure to COVID-19 in Windsor and Essex County.
On Friday morning, the Windsor Essex County Health Unit reported one new case of the virus in the community. Health officials said it involved a person who was a close contact of someone who had previously tested positive. That brings the total number of confirmed cases in the community to 2,542. There are currently 90 active cases that the health unit is monitoring.
"The primary source of exposure continues to be close contact with a confirmed case, which is something that we definitely want to focus on in terms of reducing the number of contacts in the community," said Medical Officer of Health for Windsor Essex Dr. Wajid Ahmed.
The latest epidemiological study shows a 2.9 per cent death rate in the community. About nine per cent of all people who contracted the virus needed hospital care over the course of their illness.
There have been no cases of COVID-19 in the agricultural sector in the last week.
There has been a spike of cases among children aged 10-19. In the last two weeks, 37 per cent of confirmed cases have occurred in this age group. Dr. Wajid Ahmed said these cases will be closely monitored as children head back to school next week.
