For the first time in 2020, a resident of Windsor-Essex has tested positive for the West Nile Virus.
The West Nile virus is usually transmitted to humans through the bite of an infected mosquito.
"The mosquito species capable of spreading the West Nile Virus have been identified throughout Windsor Essex County through the health unit's surveillance program. This positive human case is a reminder for residents to continue to protect themselves from exposure while enjoying the outdoors. It is also important to remove any standing water around homes and businesses," said Medical Officer of Health Dr. Wajid Ahmed.
According to the health unit, most people with West Nile Virus never develop symptoms. About 20 per cent develop symptoms of a West Nile fever, with less than 1 per cent developing severe neuro-invasive disease.
To avoid mosquito bites, the health unit recommends using an insect repellent, wearing light-coloured long sleeves and pants when outdoors, and limit the time you spend outdoors at dawn and dusk. All standing water should be removed from your property to avoid mosquito breeding.
