The Windsor Essex County Health Unit is in the process of hiring 15 additional nurses who will be dedicated to schools this year.
The health unit was allocated these positions as part of the province's plan for a back to school safety.
"We are in the recruitment phase for the nurses. We're still determining the roles and responsibilities as they support COVID in the schools. We also have additional nurses that are being hired through our COVID Response Teams," said WECHU CEO and Chief Nursing Officer Theresa Marentette.
Medical Officer of Health Dr. Wajid Ahmed is encouraging parents to educate their children on how to help protect themselves from COVID-19 as they prepare for going back to school.
"It is crucial that the adults in children's lives are informed on the measures that can be taken by themselves and the students whether they are learning at home or in the classroom to keep up with their health and well-being," said Dr. Ahmed.
The health unit is developing a dedicated webpage to give parents additional resources to help educate their children.
"With the guidance that parents can use to talk to their children and also to educate themselves on what to expect when they go back to school and from a school perspective what are the systems that are in place to keep their children safe," said Dr. Ahmed.
The dedicated webpage is still under development but Dr. Ahmed said they hope to get it up and running as soon as possible.
On Wednesday morning, the health unit reported one additional case of COVID-19 in the community. It was a community-acquired case.
