Leamington residents will have to wear a face mask in all indoor public spaces starting immediately.
Leamington Council passed a bylaw this week, making masks mandatory as an additional health measure to reduce the risk of spreading COVID-19.
Windsor's bylaw takes effect next Wednesday and Lakeshore is considering a bylaw of its own. Council will consider a draft bylaw soon.
Windsor-Essex County Health Unit CEO Theresa Marentette said residents in other municipalities in the region should expect bylaws in their communities too soon.
"Our community continues to fight against COVID-19, and council's decision to mandate masks in indoor public spaces ensures we protect our residents while helping our businesses recover and our economy grow," said Leamington Mayor Hilda McDonald. "This is a small sacrifice we can all make for the greater good of our community."
The bylaw applies to transit vehicles, retail stores, restaurants, community centres, libraries, event spaces, and common areas within a residential apartment building or condominium.
Unlike Windsor's bylaw, it does not apply to places of worship. Daycare centres, day camps, and independent health facilities are also exempt. Erie Shores Healthcare is exempt, although visitors there are asked to wear a mask.
Children under the age of two are exempt, along with children under five who can not be persuaded to do so by a parent or caregiver. Those with a disability or medical condition that prevents them from wearing a mask will not have to.
Residents will not be required to show proof they are exempt.
"We ask Leamington residents and visitors to be respectful of the rights of individuals who are exempt from wearing a mask," the municipality said in a news release.
