11 workplace outbreaks in Windsor-Essex, but health unit still won't say where

There are now five manufacturing workplaces in the region that have an outbreak of COVID-19.

There are two in Windsor, and one each in Tecumseh, Leamington, and Kingsville.

With outbreaks at different retail stores as well, the region's Medical Officer of Health faced questions on Monday why the Windsor Essex County Health Unit does not reveal the names of those workplaces.

"I don't want to create a sense of concern when there is none," said Doctor Wajid Ahmed. "More and more businesses are opening up right now. Anyone who was COVID-positive, they will be working somewhere. That doesn't necessarily mean the workplace itself is at risk."

Ahmed said we are all supposed to be taking precautions like wearing masks in public, social distancing, and washing our hands.

"I would request them [members of the public] to take precautions, presuming that anyone they are coming into contact with could be a COVID-positive patient," he continued. "I just worry that if we start to give the impression that one place is better than the other, it would lead to people not following the precautions that they should."

There are also six outbreaks in the agri-food sector in Leamington and Kingsville.

Workers in the agri-food sector continue to make up the bulk of new COVID-19 cases in Windsor-Essex. Of the 41 cases reported Monday, 25 were workers in the region's greenhouses and farms. Another 14 cases are from community-spread, another area of concern. Just one case was in the healthcare sector and the remaining case Monday is under investigation.

There are currently 664 active cases of COVID-19 in the region, and 15 are in the hospital.
