New affordable housing project moving forward

The Meadowbrook affordable housing development is moving forward after Windsor City Council approved taking on an additional loan for the project.

The 145-unit project was expected to be completed by December, but the Windsor Essex Community Housing Corporation ran into delays due to funding and the pandemic.

The original estimate for the project was $39 million with the federal government covering $22 million.

The bid came in significantly higher.

The city originally approved a $15.5 million loan but has now authorized a loan up to $20.5 million.

Once the loan is approved by the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation, it is expected construction on the project will start in August 2020, and be completed by August 2021.

While the City of Windsor had to approve the increased loan amount, the increased project costs are not expected to cost the city taxpayer any additional funds.

The 10-storey, 145-unit project will include 76 affordable housing units. Of those, 12 units would be for those fleeing domestic abuse, four for those with developmental disabilities, and 46 with special features for the disabled. The remaining 69 units would be offered at market rent.
