Master plan coming for Leamington's lakefront

The Municipality of Leamington has begun the process of transforming one of its prized assets.

The process of creating a waterfront master plan is now underway, and residents have been asked to provide their ideas on what they would like to see on the waterfront, and in what manner they wish to see it.

Leamington's ultimate goal is to provide a waterfront space that is mixed-use and welcoming to both pedestrians and tourists.

Chief Administrative Officer Peter Neufeld said there is a multitude of options.

"Leamington's waterfront has always had so much untapped potential. We are developing a plan to realize upon the great value of our waterfront and transform it into a premier destination for residents and visitors alike," said Neufeld.

The master plan will continue building on improvements that have already been made to the area, such as Sunset Stadium, the marina, and the ferry terminal to Pelee Island.

"Leamington Council is very supportive of creating this vision and sees community input as an important part of the process in shaping the future of our waterfront," said Mayor Hilda MacDonald. "When complete, the goal is for Leamington's waterfront to be a vibrant destination that drives tourism, fosters economic success and attracts and retains a new generation to Leamington."

The municipality is working with Mehak, Kelly and Associates, and consultants from thinc design. Due to restrictions on public gatherings made necessary by the COVID-19 pandemic, an online platform has been set up. Residents can go there to place ideas on an interactive map and share their thoughts through opinion polls and surveys. Throughout the master plan's development, the municipality will post updates on progress.

Once public input is gathered throughout the summer, the municipality will start looking at design options in the fall. A completed master plan is expected to be in place by spring 2021.
