LaSalle's Fire Chief retiring, deputy fire chief promoted

There is a big change coming for LaSalle Fire Services.

After 35 years, Fire Chief Dave Sutton is retiring in April 2021.

The fire department has focused on a values-based leadership style that started with former Fire Chief Ken Day, who passed away in 2011. Succession planning over the past eight years has helped the department prepare for changes like a retirement.

"Chief Sutton has encouraged collaboration between administration and outside organizations so that when the time comes, staff are familiar with what might be expected," said LaSalle Mayor Marc Bondy.

Current Deputy Fire Chief Ed Thiessen will take over Sutton's role when he leaves.

Sutton started with the department in 1986. He began as a volunteer firefighter with the Sandwich West Fire Department and took a full-time position with LaSalle dispatch later that year. In 1989, he became a career firefighter and climbed the ranks becoming the Deputy Fire Chief in 2008, the Acting Fire Chief in 2011. He was appointed the permanent Fire Chief in 2012.

"Chief Sutton has led the municipality through several emergency situations over the years," added CAO Joe Milicia. "It has been an honour to have Chief Sutton on our municipal management team. Likewise, we have worked closely with Deputy Fire Chief Thiessen, and expect the success of the department to continue under his leadership."

Sutton and Thiessen will work closely over the next few months to ensure the transition is smooth.
