Good Samaritan helps catch suspected 'porch pirates'

Windsor police are crediting a citizen's call with the quick apprehension of a pair accused of theft.

It happened around noon Monday on Wyandotte Street West near Crawford Avenue. A concerned citizen told police that they saw a suspicious female taking a package off the porch of a home, then leaving the area with a male companion.

Officers obtained suspect descriptions and the pair was soon located and arrested without incident, according to Constable Talya Natyshak. The stolen item was recovered in their possession.

Chanelle Hopkins, 28, of Windsor, is charged with theft of mail, possession of stolen property, and failure to comply with a release order. Bryden Lewenza, 33, is accused of theft of mail and possession of stolen property. These charges have not been proven in court.

Police would like to use this incident to remind residents to give them a call if they should notice suspicious activity. The citizen's call led to almost immediate apprehension of the suspects and the return of the stolen goods.
