COVID-19 cases on the rise among farmworkers

The Windsor Essex County Health Unit has reported another 38 cases of COVID-19 among the local farmworkers.

Dr. Wajid Ahmed said most of the results they are getting back right now are the result of testing done before organized mass testing of the workers began in Leamington on Tuesday.

"We would expect to see more cases as we expand the testing because now we are actively looking for cases," said Dr. Ahmed. "The impact of those cases I think is yet to be seen but it wouldn't be a surprise for us to find more cases."

Ahmed said many community partners are working together to better support the migrant farm population as case counts continue to rise.

"The entire health care system partners are collaborating and finding innovative solutions to address this issue," he said.

To date, over 200 farmworkers have tested positive for the virus and two have died. The cases represent around 22 per cent of all positive cases in the Windsor-Essex region.

To date, 1,104 people in the region have tested positive for the virus, 656 people have recovered, and 67 people have passed away.
