Long-term care residents who were treated at the Windsor Regional Hospital field hospital are being transferred back to their rooms at Heron Terrace.
The Windsor Essex County Health Unit declared the outbreak at Heron Terrace over on Sunday. Residents will be moved back home over the next week.
Around 40 people who tested positive for COVID-19 over the last two months were moved to the field hospital when staff were overwhelmed at Heron Terrace. Windsor Regional Hospital CEO David Musyj said patients and their families were very grateful to have the facilities provided to them.
"At the end of the day, lives were saved by having the field hospital so kudos to the staff and to the amazing families," said Musyj. "Overall, there was a lot of tears, a lot of hugs but a lot of positives coming out of the creation of the field hospital."
The field hospital, located in St. Clair College's Sports complex, will be cleaned and remain set up in case of a future need.
"We'll go in and make sure it is set up and it's continued to be set up to deal with any future needs that might arise, be it being prepared for possibly what's been termed as a second wave and or any other issues," said Musyj.
Staff who were working at the field hospital will be moved back into other tasks at the Met campus or the Ouellette Campus of Windsor Regional Hospital. Some staff will also be used to help with mass testing of the farmworkers in Leamington.
Musyj said if needed, the field hospital can be operational again within hours.
