The City of Windsor has issued a reminder on how to protect your home's plumbing and municipal sewers, with residents spending more time at home.
Specifically, the city wants to remind residents what not to pour down the drain or flush down the toilet.
"Fats, oils, and grease poured down a drain can build up on sewer walls causing blockages," said a release from the city. "Blockages can lead to basement flooding."
The city spends a significant amount of money, removing those blockages. Still, residents can do their part by pouring cooled kitchen fats, oils, and grease into a container and storing it in the fridge or freezer until it solidifies. Once it is solid, it can be placed in the garbage.
Personal care products and flushable wipes are other no-nos. Even products labelled flushable do not dissolve and can plug up home plumbing, sewers, and even pumping stations.
The only material that should be flushed down the toilet is human waste and toilet paper.
If city workers find a sewer clog near your home, you may receive educational material in your mailbox.
