A two-day enforcement blitz in Windsor-Essex has resulted in over 100 charges being laid.
The joint traffic initiative was conducted by the Windsor police, LaSalle police, the Ontario Provincial Police Traffic Management Unit, and the Ontario Ministry of Transportation. Over the two days, officers wrote up a total of 135 charges.
The first part of the initiative took place Tuesday in the construction zone on Highway 401 near Lakeshore Road 105, with officers using light detection and ranging. A sum of 61 charges were laid, including three for stunt driving. The highest speed clocked on Tuesday was 167 kilometres per hour, over twice the speed limit of 80 kilometres per hour in a construction zone.
The second part occurred Wednesday on the E.C. Row Expressway in Windsor, Front Street in LaSalle, and Highway 3 in LaSalle. A total of 74 charges were issued, with 68 of them for speeding. The rest were for driver licence violations, having cannabis readily available in a vehicle, operating without insurance, using a cell phone while driving, and stunt driving.
Law enforcement is using this blitz to remind drivers to be responsible and safe at all times. Obey all speed limits, hang up the phone, and be especially cautious in construction zones.
