Heat causing extra concern during pandemic

Windsor-Essex Medical Officer of Health Dr. Wajid Ahmed is urging people to take extra caution to avoid heat-related illnesses during the COVID-19 pandemic.

With fewer options available for people to escape the heat, Dr. Ahmed said it is even more important to stay hydrated and wear lightweight loose-fitting clothing to avoid heat-related illness.

He also recommends limiting the amount of time you wear a mask and only wear it when absolutely necessary.

"Cotton is more breathable than synthetic fabrics and will be more breathable in the heat," said Ahmed. "Make sure your mask fits well but not too tight and carry extra masks if yours becomes damp with sweat."

The City of Windsor has opened a day program at Water World for the area's vulnerable population during the pandemic.

The Windsor Essex County Health Unit confirmed four new cases of COVID-19 on Tuesday. Only two long-term care facilities remain under outbreak management.
