A man is facing a series of charges after a routine traffic stop led to a major seizure of illicit cannabis.
LaSalle police said a suspect was originally stopped late Thursday night on Highway 3 near the main St. Clair College campus, allegedly driving 121 kilometres per hour in an 80 kilometre per hour zone.
"The lone male driver was found to have his driver's license suspended," said Senior Constable Terry Seguin. "During the interaction with the driver, the investigating officer made sensory and visual observations that led him to reasonably believe that cannabis marijuana was being unlawfully being kept within the vehicle."
Officers seized about 700 grams of cannabis and cannabis-related products, along with $14,070 in Canadian cash. The pot was estimated to have a street value of $7,000.
The suspect, who has not been named since the case has not yet been brought before a court, is charged with possession of cannabis for the purpose of trafficking, speeding, driving while under suspension, and driving a motor vehicle with cannabis readily available.
Police remind residents that even though recreational cannabis is legal in Canada, it can only be purchased legally online or at licenced brick-and-mortar stores. The public is also reminded that with Victoria Day weekend upon us, officers will be stepping up enforcement patrols to cut down on distracted and aggressive driving.
The investigation is ongoing.
