Dr. Ahmed recommends the use of cloth masks in public

The Medical Officer of Health for Windsor Essex is now recommending that people wear cloth masks while in public.

Dr. Wajid Ahmed previously warned the masks could create a false sense of security for the user, but now admits with proper use it creates an additional layer of protection for the public.

"Wearing a cloth mask reduces the likelihood of you spreading the respiratory droplets to others. In other words, it can protect others from your germs. A cloth mask does not protect you from the germs of others. When people wear these masks at a community level we will reduce the risk of spreading the disease. The key part of using the cloth mask is its appropriate usage. If a mask is not used appropriately it can also cause harm" said Dr. Ahmed

Dr. Ahmed said masks should be put on or taken off only by the ear loops and only after washing your hands. Avoid re-adjusting the mask once it is on and do not touch the front of the mask. Once you take off the mask, put it directly in the washing machine and wash with hot water.

Dr. Ahmed would like to remind people that the use of masks does not replace other public health measures like washing hands frequently and keeping two metres distance whenever possible.

The Windsor Essex County Health Unit reported six new cases of COVID-19 in the region on Thursday, for a total of 751. A total of 387 people have recovered from the virus. There are currently 23 people in hospital with COVID-19. There are 1,704 test results pending.
