Health unit reports two more outbreaks at long-term care facilities

Two more residents of Windsor and Essex County have passed away due to COVID-19.

A man in his 80s and a woman in her 90s are the latest local residents to die after contracting the virus.

The Windsor Essex County Health Unit also declared outbreaks at two additional long-term care facilities in the region. A staff member at Chartwell Oak Park LaSalle and a staff member at Berkshire Care Centre tested positive for the virus. There are currently outbreaks at 10 facilities locally.

As of Wednesday morning, 1,343 people were awaiting COVID-19 test results. The health unit conducted over 600 tests Tuesday. Currently, it is taking an average of six to seven days to receive test results.

Dr. Wajid Ahmed, medical officer of health for Windsor-Essex, said there are many pieces to the puzzle when trying to get lab results back in a timely fashion.

"When it gets to the lab then the turn around time can be considered 24-48 hours that they can do it but the specimen has to get to the lab in the first place," he said.

Ahmed said getting test results is a matter of coordination and lab capacity.

To date, 9,027 people in the community have been tested for the virus, 665 have tested positive, an increase of nine cases from Tuesday. Since the beginning of the outbreak, 229 people have recovered and 57 people have died. There are currently 15 people in hospital with COVID-19.
