COVID-19 test results still delayed in Windsor-Essex

The Windsor Essex County Health Unit is still waiting six to seven days to get the majority of the community's COVID-19 test results back.

That's despite Monday's announcement the province has met and is exceeding its testing goals.

As of Tuesday morning, 1,278 people in the community were waiting for their results. In a 24 hour period, the health unit received 312 test results, and of those, 15 cases were positive. Medical Officer of Health Dr. Wajid Ahmed says they are receiving most of the high-risk population's test results much quicker, but even those results can take up to three days.

"At a local level, it is important for us to get those results back because some of those results can be actioned immediately as needed, and if those results are delayed it's a challenge," said Dr. Wajid Ahmed.

Ahmed said the health unit is pushing to have all test results back in less than three days.

In total, 656 people in the community have tested positive for the virus. There have been 55 deaths in the community and 210 people have recovered from the illness.

A woman in her 90's, a resident of a long-term care home, passed away due to COVID-19 yesterday.
