Health unit reports one additional death

The Windsor Essex County Health Unit is reporting one additional death in the community due to COVID-19.

A woman in her 90s passed away Wednesday.

The health unit has been working closely with local farms and greenhouses to protect the health and well-being of the migrant worker population in the community. To date, there have been eight migrant workers that tested positive for the virus in two homes.

Medical Officer of Health Dr. Wajid Ahmed said the individuals were properly isolated and he does not have concerns about any outbreaks. Outbreaks at any facility would be reported as part of the daily news briefing.

"This is a high-risk population. The work environment, their living conditions, it puts them at a higher risk of spreading COVID-19 in that population. That's why most of the proactive work that we have done with all our partners is to ensure that everyone has all of the information that they need. They're very clear about the roles and responsibilities that everyone has to take to take care of that population," said Dr. Ahmed. "We feel that we have a good handle at least at this point and we continue to work with all the partners to make sure that it stays that way."

As of Thursday morning, 6,437 people in Windsor Essex have been tested for COVID-19 with 594 tests coming back positive. That is an increase of eight from Wednesday. There are 709 tests pending. Dr. Ahmed reports there is a delay in receiving test results, however, they are getting priority tests in a timely fashion.

To date, 186 people in Windsor-Essex have recovered from the virus.
