The Windsor Essex County Health Unit is reporting six new deaths in the community due to COVID-19.
Five of the people were residents of long-term care homes in the community. Two women and one man in their 90s, two women in their 80s, and a woman in her 70s passed away because of the virus.
An outbreak has been declared at Extendicare Southwood Lakes after a staff member tested positive for the virus. This is the second outbreak at the long-term care facility. An outbreak is declared after one staff or resident tests positive. There are currently outbreaks at six long-term care facilities in the region.
"Every time we declare an outbreak in any of the homes, whether it's a retirement home or a long-term care home in our community, we work immediately with the home to ensure that all the appropriate measures are taken to prevent and limit the spread of the outbreak," said Dr. Wajid Ahmed, Medical Officer of Health for Windsor-Essex.
There are 586 positive cases of COVID-19 in the region, an increase of five cases from Tuesday. A total of 6,319 people have been tested in the region, 821 test results are pending.
