A Windsor police officer is facing a criminal charge for allegedly assaulting a suspect who was in police custody.
The Windsor Police Service asked the Chatham-Kent Police Service to investigate after the suspect was assaulted at the detention centre located at Windsor police headquarters on January 23, 2020.
The suspect suffered an injury and was taken to hospital for medical assessment.
Following the independent investigation conducted by CK police, Sergeant James Lucier, a 32-year veteran of the Windsor Police Service, was arrested on Wednesday without incident. He is now charged with one count of assault causing bodily harm.
Lucier has been released on an undertaking and is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Windsor on September 3. He has not been suspended from his position at this time but is currently assigned to administrative duties.
The province's police watchdog, the Special Investigations Unit (SIU), was also notified of the assault allegations but due to the less serious nature of the injury, it declined to investigate. The SIU investigates incidents involving police officers and members of the public that result in death, serious injury and allegations of sexual assault.
