Health unit reports seven new COVID-19 cases

The Windsor Essex County Health Unit is reporting seven new cases of COVID-19 in the region.

In its mid-day update, the health unit confirmed a man in his 70s passed away from the virus.

To help limit the spread of the disease, the health unit has 70 staff members concentrated on contact tracing. It's expected that each positive case of COVID-19 will infect two to three people. Health unit staff reach out to each known contact of the positive individual to determine if they have any symptoms.

Close contacts and people living in the same household as a positive individual are told to self-isolate for 14 days.

Public health officials have tested 4,718 people in the community and they are waiting for 644 results. Of the 525 confirmed cases, 116 have recovered, 26 people are in hospital, and 32 people have died.

The health unit continues to manage outbreaks at six long-term care and retirement facilities in the region.
