The Town of Tecumseh is installing permanent berms on 16 private properties in an effort to mitigate flood risks in the town.
Town staff believe these efforts could help prevent inland flooding that could affect up to 5,500 properties. Lake levels are expected to reach peak levels in June or July. Currently Lake St. Clair is 33 centimetres above the April 2019 levels.
The installation of clay berms along with site grading and installation will be completed under an order by Mayor Gary McNamara under the Emergency Management and Civil Protection Act.
Due to the current pandemic situation the town is undertaking these measures immediately to reduce the risk of needing an emergency shelter. Residents have already been notified to have an emergency plan in place that includes evacuating to a friend or family member should serious flooding occur.
Work is expected to begin as early as Monday, April 20. Affected property owners will be notified by letter and telephone. Town staff indicated to Tecumseh council members that all property owners have already been consulted and they are all on board with the work that needs to be completed. The project will cost the town $500,000.
