OPP lay charges after recovering stolen vehicle

An Essex man is facing multiple charges after a commercial vehicle was stolen Thursday afternoon.

The vehicle was reported stolen to the Ontario Provincial Police around noon on Thursday. It was equipped with GPS and was believed to be in the Essex area. OPP officers located the vehicle around 12:45 p.m. but the driver failed to stop when police activated their lights and sirens. The car was not pursued.

The vehicle was later seen travelling east on County Road 20 and, according to police, was being driven in a dangerous way. It was stopped with the help of several officers. The driver tried to run away but was stopped by Essex County OPP canine Maximus.

He was taken into custody and then taken to hospital where he was treated for minor injuries inflicted by Maximus during the arrest.

The OPP has charged a 27-year-old Essex man with dangerous driving, failing to stop for police, possession of stolen property, driving while disqualified and failing to comply with a court order. None of the charges have been proven in court.
