The Windsor-Essex County Health Unit has given parents two weeks to get their kids' vaccination records in order or the children will be suspended from school.
In a media release issued on Thursday, the health unit stated that students who do not have an up-to-date immunization record by 4:30 p.m. March 10 will be suspended from school for up to 20 days, per the Immunization of School Pupils Act of 1990. Suspensions will start the following day.
Dr. Wajid Ahmed, medical officer of health for the WECHU, is encouraging parents to use this time to complete the vaccination records, and that the health unit is available to help.
"We really hope that parents and guardians will provide an up to date immunization record of their child to the health unit," said Ahmed. "WECHU staff will continue to work in collaboration with school administrators to follow-up with affected families and offer solutions."
The health unit completed an audit of all elementary school vaccination records in Windsor-Essex this past fall. Those students with incomplete records were identified, and letters were sent to parents. While many of the affected parents completed their children's records, there are some outstanding. Final notices were sent out in January.
Parents may submit records to the health unit in person, by phone, or through the secure website. Those with incomplete vaccinations should contact their primary care physician, attend a clinic, or stop by the health unit offices in Windsor and Leamington to receive missing shots.
Any parents wanting to exempt their children from immunizations for medical, conscience or religious reasons must contact the health unit to obtain an exemption package. An education session may also be required. Exemptions are only granted by the health unit and must be on file with them, or a student can still be suspended.
