Windsor-Detroit Tunnel closures coming up

The Windsor-Detroit Tunnel has three more overnight closures planned over the coming weeks.

It will shut down at 9 p.m. Thursday, February 20, and again on February 27 and March 5. Each time it will reopen at 5 a.m. the following morning.

Until further notice, there is also a height restriction of 10 feet and seven inches.

"They'll be pouring the ceiling in Detroit. They'll be removing more formwork, and then pouring the ceiling and the bench slab sections in Windsor," said CEO Carolyn Brown.

The last closures were in October and November, but renovations on the tunnel ceiling have been ongoing since the fall of 2018.

"Our hope is that by spring 2020, we will be done in terms of full closures," said Brown. "Now, after March 5, there will be some additional closures required because we can not pour the ceiling while we have traffic going underneath."

She also said the disruption for the commuting public could have been worse.

"We have been doing a fair amount of work using single-lane closures," she said. "We have not closed the tunnel for full-closures as much as originally anticipated."

So far, the project is on budget. The renovations should cost $22 million.
