Plans set for school work stoppages in Windsor

The City of Windsor has drawn contingency plans for what may be a hectic week at local school boards.

With the potential for three days next week in which classes may be cancelled due to work action by teachers and educational workers, the city announced on Thursday a set of closures and day camp opportunities for students who may need a place to go. The announcement is being made to allow parents and guardians a chance to make childcare arrangements for their children.

If there is no tentative deal in place, members of the Ontario English Catholic Teachers' Association (OECTA) will hold a province-wide one-day walkout on Tuesday. This will affect students at the Windsor-Essex Catholic District School Board (WECDSB). Members of the Elementary Teachers Federation of Ontario (ETFO) will walk out across Ontario on Thursday and in Windsor-Essex on Friday, meaning class cancellations with the Greater Essex County District School Board (GECDSB).

A walkout by Catholic teachers on Tuesday will mean these Ontario EarlyON Child and Family Centres will be closed.

  • Our Lady of Perpetual Help (OLPH) Catholic Elementary School in Windsor
  • Holy Name Catholic Elementary School in Essex
  • Sacred Heart Catholic Elementary School in LaSalle
  • St. Pius X Catholic Elementary School in Tecumseh
Should there be walkouts at the public board next Thursday and Friday, it will affect these EarlyON Centres.

  • Princess Elizabeth Public School in Windsor
  • Talbot Trail Public School in Windsor

Specific child care centres in school buildings may remain open during work action. It is suggested you contact your childcare provider directly for the latest, most accurate information.

As it has recently, the city of Windsor will offer day camps at two locations during work action days. They are the Capri Pizzeria Recreation Complex on Pulford Avenue and the Optimist Community Centre on Ypres Avenue. Registration is now open for next Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. The cost is $32 per child per day for ages four and older. If you register online, use the following barcodes.

  • Optimist Centre - Tuesday - 17777
  • Capri Pizzeria Complex - Thursday - 17778
  • Optimist Centre - Thursday - 17780

Locations will be open at 7:30 a.m. each day and remain open until 5:30 p.m.

If either, or both, education unions reach agreements with the province and schools are open, refunds will be offered.

Complete information about the day camps is available at the official City of Windsor website.
